Khmer Nationalism bows down to Thai??

CamThai flagAs my friends and I were taking beer in a street café last night, a promotion girl came and asked us to buy her product(555 cigarette). The girl looked so beautiful and hot.

Being endowed with good looking, my friends could soften a girl's heart from his smiles and sweet voice. Moreover, as a foreign scholars, they outpoint other men in the love affairs.

In the conversations, a question came out "what is your nationality?". "we are Thais", I was really shocked with my friends' answer. Oh my Buddha! Why Thai, not Cambodian? I stayed calm, though. However, some questions aroused in my head as why we needed to answer like that? Is it ashamed to say we are Cambodian? Additionally, we were sitting in a high-class café, but why we had to honer the Thai instead?
