A mysterious Ho Chi Minh's teaching phrase

at Hoan Kiem lake.Most tourists and Hanoi residents must have seen this painting and its text as in the photo on the right, as it's hanged in front of a big building, right on the corner of a busy cross-road at Hoan Kiem lake, the center of the town. The text right below the portrait says: Let's rebuild our country neater, bigger.

I like hanging out around the place and keep looking at the mysterious phrase. Of course, I'm curious on the term "bigger"--how uncle Ho teaches his compatriots to build a country bigger?? :-p

  1. Good, you have understood the mean of Uncle Ho. He want not only Cambodia but also whole Indochina to become a part of Vietnam.hehe
    Cambodia is too small and the best way for Khmer is belong to Vietnam. Let follow what Vietnam want (Viet say "Live" mean "Live", Vietnam say "Die" mean "Die").

  3. Really? If Vietnam did not sacrefied so much to defeat Khmer Rouge in 1979, now I do not know any body is Khmer in Cambodia?
    Not only 1.7millions peopes died by Polpot, but also whole Cambodian died under holding power by Polpot.
    Vietnam supports Cambodia so much but seem to Campodia donot know that.Cambodia look like a baby of China. Let become a young brother of Vietnam, this is better than beome a baby of China.

  8. Old time most kings or heads of the coutry, all had the ambition of making their own countries bigger.
    Nowadays that philosophy had changed. So Cambodia will remain the same for a very long time. Invasion or colonization was sinful and it would be all behind us forever, I believe that. I couldnot see any good for Vietnam to take over any other country.
    As a modern and open-minded Vietnamese, I believe Cambodia would be more prosperous, and safer if if the trade between the 2 neighboring countries increase. Viet and Khmer understand and trust more each other more. And of course, vice versa.
    Imagine yourself, be friendly with your closest neighbour is always better than be unfriendly. Be friend with a far away neighbor is good, but shouldn't be priority.

  9. "Bigger" means that from a poor country ruined by wars Vietnamese people will build up a modern country like other beautiful places in the world.(Know why the country was ruined?? Study the history!) I should leave this message for the owner of this blog to get rid of repeating other post like this but also want to despise you guys, idiots! What a shame.

    Y ur young brother? maybe u r low educated people. go back to read history. viet name used to be under china and then cambodia a thousand years ago. that time will come back in the future.
    and also dont forget that we help u to have hochiminh trail in cambodia to win over south viet nam otherwise u still a dam dam poor country u asshole.

  12. To Thanhcivil: I don't care what are you guys talking about. I do care about my country only and please do not dream to take any pieces of Cambodia again. I don't know what did the Cambodia's leader gave to VN in the past and i don't care how many VN soldiers died in Cambodia in 70s and 80s. U guys might think i am kind of selfish but let me tell you one thing,VN, U took about more than 20 Cambodia's province in 18th & 19th century. And now you want me to deserve that? Oh yeah, I should respect your help to help Cambodian government against Khmer Rouge, i appreciate that, but if you want all Khmer people to thank to you i think i'd not so easy then. 99% of Khmer people hates Vietnamese.

  13. I'm not sure that this phrase was spoken out by Ho Chi Minh. Like many slogans that one can see quite often along streets. I wonder that there must be something hiden behind, that serves someones of important position...(If these phrases belong to HCM, please give me the proofs)
    Return to the phrase in question, in fact it was there since a longtime (I dont know exactly but very long time). Never had I put a question about "bigger", but if this word can be "misunderstood", it has't place to be there. A bigger country is never for a better life of people (Vietnamese and Cambodian), why not unite together as in Europe.

    A "bigger" country philosopy is far to be obsolete.
    Look what is happening in the world, how "stronger" countries do to their neighbors ?
    My opinion, I don't want to see neither Cambodge becomes bigger nor Vietnam becomes smaller. I want to see one day the border open and people exchange goods and culture.
